Scott Oates is a former Navy SEAL who served 6 years at SEAL Team 2 as an 18 Delta Combat Medic, bringing battlefield lifesaving skills to the most demanding special operations environments.

A martial arts pioneer who took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in its infancy in the early 90s, Scott is now a 4th-degree Black Belt in BJJ under legendary 6x World Champions Saulo and Xande Ribeiro, and a Black Belt in Judo. Over 35 years, he has mastered BJJ, Judo, wrestling, and mixed martial arts.

For more than two decades, Scott has professionally taught real-world self-defense, combatives, edged-weapon defense, and close-range handgun tactics to every branch of the U.S. military (including Tier One operators), federal law enforcement agencies, state and local police, the Intelligence Community, and international Special Forces including Canadian and New Zealand units.

As a certified ShivWorks instructor, he has delivered tactical combatives training across 42 states and 11 countries, working alongside world-renowned founder Craig Douglas for the last decade. Scott’s expertise extends to Executive Protection and Surveillance Intelligence, consulting on high-level surveillance, counter-surveillance, and SDRs for DoD, JSOC, USSOCOM, and government agencies.

Beyond the tactical world, Scott excels in verbal de-escalation and deselection—the high art of preventing violence before it starts. His classes blend deadly serious content with sharp wit and humor. He takes the mission seriously… but never takes himself too seriously.

In the civilian sector, Scott is a highly successful entrepreneur with 50 rental units, 25 years of property development, three martial arts and CrossFit gyms, and two restaurants including Scotty Quixx—one of the East Coast’s hottest nightlife destinations for nearly a decade.
